The Basic Castle Protections are the walls and gates. The basic siege tools used against these defenses are Scaling Ladders, Battering Rams, and Mantlets. There are other Ladder, Ram, and Mantlet equivalents available as awards, and some available as tools that must be purchased with rubies. However, I will limit this discussion to the basic tools most easily available to everyone – the ones that can be manufactured in the Siege Workshop.

BASIC SIEGE TOOLING:

Enough Ladders to reduce wall protection to zero.

Enough Rams to reduce gate protection to zero.

Enough Mantlets to reduce ranged defender effectiveness to zero.

USING YOUR TOOLS:

I spied a Level 28 castle to use as an example:

(Although this set-up is fairly typical of what I found spying various castle at this level, it is very poor defensively as the castle lord has not put any defensive tools on his castle walls or gate. We will discuss defensive strategies in a separate “How-to”.)

Useing that spy report to show how the various defenses affect the tools used when setting up an attack:

Left Flank:

lvl2left-flank-attack

Reading from left to right across the gray band in the center top, the setup shows that the

defenses at this castle are as follows for the left flank:

          +0% Wall strength

          +135% Melee soldier strength

          +104% Ranged soldier strength

          +7% Moat strength

An important point is that the various bonuses from both the Castellan defending the castle, and from the Commander showing in the box at the bottom left of the attack set-up page, are already factored in to the defense percentages listed.

The next 5 boxes show the troops on that flank, showing that there are both Melee and Ranged soldiers.

In setting up tooling for this attack, ideally I would use ladders (to zero out any wall bonus) and 21 mantlets (to zero out the +104% ranged strength bonus). [Unfortunately, there is no tooling which will reduce the Melee soldier strength bonus.] However, due to the low level of this castle, there is only one box on the left flank for tools, which will hold a maximum of 10 of one type of tool. So at best one could put in 10 mantlets for a 50% reduction of the ranged soldier strength.

Center or Front:

lvl28-center-flank

The defenses on all three flanks were set identically, so the only additional tooling needed will be for the gate in the Center section (or Center Flank, as some people call it).

Looking at the Center, the first box in the gray band at the top shows +36% gate bonus. So the tooling for the center section should include 4 Rams to zero out the gate defense bonus, but due to the larger amount of tooling allowed, we could put the 4 rams in the first box and 16 mantlets in the second box, reducing the ranged soldiers strength by about 80%.

Right Flank:

lvl28-right-flank

As you can see, the Right Flank defenses are the same as those on the Left Flank, so again I would just use the 10 mantlets to reduce the ranged defense.

Remember that any tools you send that are not used will be returned to your castle, so it is better to err on the side of sending too many.

Obviously, this is just an example – each castle lord will have their own defensive set-up and castellan, and the strengths (and weaknesses) of your own commander will also determine what tools are needed to successfully attack another castle, a robber baron, or Nomad camp, etc.
